My friend James and I went to prom together. As you can see, he dressed in drag and I wore a tux. We had been planning this for months, and knew the risks we were taking considering we go to a school with a lot of close-minded people. On our way, my hands were shaking and my heart was racing. James said he was incredibly nervous as well. We got out of the car, and started heading toward the entrance. James and I got some stares, and it made my heart race even more. But as soon as we entered those doors, we got nothing but praise. People from right and left were complimenting us and telling us how fantastic we looked. One girl that neither of us knew even came up to us and told us how much she appreciated that we were doing this, and that it meant so much to her and so many other people. Our principal, who is gay, came up to us and congratulated us for being brave- because he knows how difficult it must be. Sure, during the night we got a few people talking about us behind our backs and a few people laughing. But overall, it was a fantastic outcome, and I could not have had a better night.
